Holden thoroughly describes his brother Allie's baseball glove in the essay written for Stradlater. The glove, once owned by is deceased brother, is now held close to Holden.
Write a descriptive paragraph or more (you will probably need more than a single paragraph) that thoroughly describes an object that is held dearly by you or someone that you know. The description should include minute details that make this object unique. For example, you might describe a sibling's doll, your grandfather's trophy muskie, or your band instrument.
My parents bought me a ring because whenever i wear it i will think of them, now that i am far way from my home. I choose it in a jewelry with my twin sister ( we have the same ring). It's a really thin ring, it is silver but on the top there is a white pearl. There are two small brilliant one on the right and one on the left of the pearl. This ring has a meaning: the pearl means household and the two brilliant mean me and my twin sister. According to me this object is really important because i always remember all the love for my family that is away from me.
ReplyDeleteMy friend holds dearly to him a picture of his father. His father passed away when he was in third grade so most of his memories have faded over time. Therefore, this picture is one of his most valuable objects. The picture is fairly dark, maybe in a living room setting. His muscular father stands in the middle of the picture looking down with a smirk on his face. He is wearing a fitted white t-shirt and blue jeans. His father looks to be about forty years old. Two tatoos are showing; one on his left fore arm and the other on his right bicep. This is one of the only pictures that my friend has to remember his father, so he cherishes it more than anything.
ReplyDeleteSomething that I hold dearly to me is a necklace I got from my oldest brother. It is a very simple silver necklace with a S on it, but it means a lot to me. A couple years ago my brother was deployed to Iraq for the Air Force. I was saying goodbye over the phone and he told me that when he gets back he is coming home for Christmas. So a few months went by and Christmas was coming up and my parents had only heard from him once. Christmas day came and he came home. He gave me this necklace to remind me what he had done and that he came home safe. I try to wear it everyday.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that i can think of off the top of my head would be the NASCAR die-cast cars that i have. They are put in a little blue box made just for them. They all are put in the slots end for end. I have about 50 of them. They are close to me because they remind me of the good times my family had before my parents got divorced.
ReplyDeleteI have a pair of cross earrings that are held close to me. They are posts with a black cross with a silver outline on them. The backs are silver. I got them at Claire’s in Sheboygan. I wear them to let others know I believe in God and to remind myself that God is always with me. If I need Him, He’ll always be there for me. I try to wear my cross earrings everyday because I like people to know that I believe in God, and they help remind me of God’s presence in my life.
ReplyDeleteI have a ring that is similar to the baseball glove. I received this ring after my grandfather died of leukemia many years ago. It is made of three thick intertwining bands of mettle that have the properties of copper but don’t oxidize and turn green like they should. I am unsure of what exactly the ring is made of because there are no markings of any kind on the ring. The inside surface of the ring is smooth and the outside surface of the ring is slightly rounded outward with rounded over edges. The ring is a size 12 which makes it just small enough that it won’t fit on my finger anymore.
ReplyDeleteI have no memories of my grandfather ever wearing this ring. Much to the irritation of my grandmother, the only time he ever wore a ring (including his weeding ring) was when he was going somewhere he considered to be special, otherwise his wedding ring sat next to his bed. I found this three band ring hanging on a nail in his basement woodworking shop. I have always assumed that this ring had some significant to earn a place on wall in the room where he spent the majority of his free time.
I have a necklace that is very important to me. It is two charms in one. One charm is a tiny golden cross with a minuscule diamond in the center. The other charm is a pearl with a golden swirl around it. They are both on a delicate chain that is small because I received it when I was a baby. It's significant because my grandmother gave it to me when I was born, and she just passed away after battling cancer. I was very close to her so it reminds me of her and her immense faith. The other charm was given to my mom from my dad. I don't wear it often because it's small, but I keep good care of it and it is always shiny.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that is really important to me would be my gold and silver bracelets that I got from each of my parents. My mom gave me a simple, shiny, gold bracelet to me when was younger with my name and my birthday on the back of it and I have kept it ever since. At the time she was a single mom raising me until she was married when I was four. The man she married, that has always been a dad to me, legally made me his daughter by adopting me when I was eight. When he adopted me he gave me a bracelet that looked identical to the one my mom gave me except it was silver and it had the official date of the adoption on it instead of my birthday. They both have been worn a lot since I got them, exspecially when I was little, so there are now lots of scratches and you can barely read what it says. I wear them both occasionally but whether I'm wearing or not they are both very near and dear to me. No matter how scratched they are, the bracelets both have a very significant meaning to me. While most people see me wearing just old bracelets I see a symbol of something much more.
ReplyDeleteSomething that is held dearly to me is my grandmother’s paint set. She gave it to me for Christmas in hope that I would intake on the journey of being an artist like her. This has a hand sewn paintbrush holder that she made; it has individual pockets for each special brush. There is one brush that is wooden and has scuffs at the end, as though she bite it trying to think of something. Also she gave a canvas. This is white and plan. It sits in my room for one day I will pick up that wooden paintbrush and intake on my grandmother's journey.
ReplyDeleteAn object I hold very dear to me is my uncle's old fishing pole. He left it to me in his will because some of the best moment we had together was fishing on a small lake by his house. It is a green and black fishing pole with gold loops. It has many little scratches all over the pole from many years of prior use. It also has my uncle's favorite fly on it which we made when I was 9. It is rather big and is made from green and blue feathers. It is practically falling apart because the string that holds it together is growing thin with age and looks as if it will break rather soon. Even though I do not fish anymore after my uncle's death, i hold this very close to my heart as a symbol of my uncle. Every time I see this pole hung up in my room I can remember all the stories he told me and all the things he taught me when I was younger. It seems with one glance of this simple fishing pole, it can bring back years of memories, all good and all fun, that I shared with my uncle on that small lake.

The object that I hold dear to myself is my thumb ring. My grandparents bought it for me when all of us were on a vacation to Gettysburg, PA, it was my thirteenth birthday present. The ring is supposed to symbolize an Irish wedding ring. In detail, the ring is two hands holding a heart. If you wear it and the heart is pointing up, it means that someone holds your heart, and if its pointing down, no one yet holds your heart. I wear this ring everyday because my friends and family hold my heart in their hands.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother has this chess/checkers board that was made by my cousin that I know she holds very dear. This board was given to her as a christmas present and she knew that it took my cousin almost the whole semester to complete. The board is constructed of a half inch pine boarder with an ash playing surface. The ash is alternating between pure ash wood and oak stained ash, to distinguish between light and dark squares. The squares are 3/8 of an inch by 3/8 of an inch. The whole board has a lacquer finish so it will last a long time. This board is amazing and cleerly one of a kind. It's no wonder why my grandma holds it so close to her heart.
ReplyDeleteBoth my dad and I have common objects that we both cherish. When he was young McDonalds gave out these SuperBowl magazines. My dad got most if not all of the copies. We still have them today in my room. I every once in a while will look at them just for fun and for some history lessons on football. For lasting so many years, the magazines are still in good condition. My dad has plans to keep them as long as we can. I on the other hand wanna wait for them to get more valuable and just you know sell them. As far as I know we are going to cherish them for a long time to come.
ReplyDeleteAn object that would be held close to myself would have to be my fathers old basketball shoes that he wore in highschool. They were adidas top tens and were red and white. The reason they are so close is because i used to play hockey and the season was during basketball season, so growing up I was never able to do both. I stumbled upon these shoes one day in my basement and it sort of "inspired" me to play drop hockey and take up basketball. Basketball is now a huge part of my life and will be for they rest of my life as well.
ReplyDeleteA personal possession that I cherish would be my football cleats. My football cleats are important to me because I initial them every season with my grandfathers name. This reminds me that for every game I play for him and can always keep him in my thoughts even though he is miles away. In a small way I feel like its a little something I can give back to him after all he has done for me in the past.
ReplyDeleteThe personal possession that I hold most dear would have to be a tiger statue that my grandmother gave me when I was around 10 years old. It isn't a family heirloom or anything, but it is still a gift from her and something I can remember her by. At the top of the clock is a beautiful white tiger head stareing out over the room with big blue eyes. The detail of the cat is magnificant, every stroke of color perfect. Some statues I have gotten before were made quickly and badly, making the animal look crosseyed, but this one has a clear, strait gaze.
ReplyDeleteBelow the tiger head is a roman numeral clock, inside of which is a printout of a misty rainforest scene. Whe you are looking into the picture, it almost seems like you could feel the stickyness of the jungle's air on your skin.
Around the clock are what look like tree trunks that bear the great tiger's paw prints. These trunks twine around the clock, creating a beautiful frame.
The clock has never worked, but that's ok, since the only reason I like the clock is the decorations on it, not for the clock itself. Now I can always look upon the staring tiger's face and think of my grandmother.
My most important item is my grandfathers watch. Its really big and gold. My grandpa is a very wealthy person and he gave me his watch when i was 10. My mom tells me that my grandpa wanted to give it to his son but he never had one. So that is why it really big for me
ReplyDeleteMy cherished item is my dads 1976 Martin Sigma Acoustic Guitar. It's been around ever since my dad bought it, he never got rid of it. I grew up around that guitar. I've played it and it just keeps getting better every time i play it. Every chip, ding and scratch has a certain memory to it. It may be old and faded and not flashy but it's got heart more than anything. And heart is what counts when it comes to playing guitar.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that is extremely important to me is a black and white photo of my grandfather. He passed away nearly four years ago. What makes this so important to me, is the fact I don't remember him that well. I saw him at the holidays but other than that, I didn't see him as much as I would've liked. The picture is from when he was younger, he's actually got a full head of hair, which is something, for when I knew him he didn't have. He was thinner than he was towards the end. And he was rightly with his "cop sunglasses" on and a cigarette in his mouth. He's wearing a white t-shirt and you're basic jeans holding a fish outside the house. This picture is really important to me because it reminds me of a happier time in my grandfather's life, instead of the pain he suffered in the end.
ReplyDeleteMy step-father carries around a tan stone in the shape of an angel with the words "I will never leave you" on it. He has been through many hard times and it meant a lot to him when my mother gave it to him three years ago. They were worried about their relationship because it was long distance, him living three hours north. Even though now my mother lives up there with him he still carries it as a sign of how much she loves him.
ReplyDeleteI am very protective of my golf clubs. Whenever i go golfing with my friends and they ask to try one of my clubs i instantly say no because i dont want them to mess anything up. I will let people who i know are good and will hit it good use my clubs. But i dont want my friends to wreck one of my clubs because then i will be mad at them plus they will owe me a new club and i have pretty expensive clubs.
ReplyDeleteI dont' have a favorite object, but I have a favorite place. I was born in Coon Rapids MN. Right down the street theres a place called, Lion Coon Creek Park. That is my most favorite place in the world. I've gone there since I was very young. To get to the park you had to cross the creek. Going along the creek there was a path you could take if you wanted to walk. There are 3 parts to the park. You have the kiddie section for the baby's and toddler, the normal park with the regualr swings, jungle gym, all that jazz, and than you had where you could play the sports. My favorite thing in that park though was the drinking fountain. It was a giant Lions head. I mean you had to stick you head in his mouth to get a drink of water. I remember when I was aobut 6 I was so scared that one day it's jaws were just going to snap shut on me and he would swallow me whole. Makes me laugh now. I've had a lot of good times there. I lost my first tooth there, when I fell of the spider web. I remember my twin sister getting peed on going down the slide. I know I shouldn't laugh at that, but come on it was halirous. At one point all of the kids in my family have had there birthday there. Every time I visit MN I have to go there. I don't feel complete if I don't. I know that one day I'll be taking my childern and grandchildern there, just like mine have taken me.
ReplyDeleteMy mom has a doll that is important because it was my great grandmothers. The doll is really old it's head is all metal, but the rest of the body if all cloth. The head used to be fully painted like a face, but now it is starting to shoe its age. There are chips in the paint and it is started to fade away. The back of the dolls head has grooves in it like hair. It also used to be painted like hair, but that has worn away over time. The rest of its body is covered in old and tatered clothing.
ReplyDeleteMy dad has old pottery that really mean alot to him. Some of the stuff he has his great-great-great-great grandparents made when they got here from Germany. My dad has them all displayed in our antique room in a glass case.
