Holden is constantly whining, complaining, and ranting throughout The Catcher in the Rye. And, yes, while he does make a good point once every few chapters or an observation that, whether you agree or disagree, holds some truth, you are probably ready to fire back at Old Holden.
So put on your red hunting hat and develop your own Holden-esque rant aimed at Holden himself. Think about the novel so far - What irritates you most about Holden? What has he said? What about his observations? Holden uses slang terms from the 1949 so your task is to incorporate slang terms from today. Keep the language clean. Even though Holden curses, you do not need to insert curses into your rant.
This should be at least two paragraphs of Holden-like frustration unleashed upon the world.
Volunteers will be asked to share their rants with the class. Please, proofread your work and have fun.

Holden Caulfield is a freak. He has untamable emotions and out of this world thoughts. Holden doesn't fit in with anyone but I don't blame others for not giving him the time of day. He is a perverted, sex oriented teenage boy who, in my mind, doesn't respect women. Maybe his intensions are good, but he often comes off as creepy to others. For example, he flirts with Ernest's mom, he attempts to make friends with young children on the playground, and kisses a strange women on the forehead. This is not my perception of normal. Holden often calls others phony, but I truly believe he is the most phony character in this book so far. He lies on a regular basis and also is an undependable narrator, which I find annoying. Holden Caulfield needs to grow up, stop complaining, and take responsibility.

Through out the book he has been complaining about how he is lonley, but when he meets someone to talk to he decides that they are all phoney. He then runs away from people who could have actually talk to because of his own selfishness.
ReplyDeleteInstead of complaining the whole time Holden should atually try to become friends with some people and not screw it up. Holden goes through his life complaining, but then deciding he could always find someone better. Holden is a doush for inviting people to go somewhere with him and then becoming a total jerk. Holden needs to realize that if he wants to survive in this world he needs to get his priorities straight.

i think holden is psycho, he even said it himeself in the book. he needs to stop complaining all the time and get some friends. and he seems really depressed because he can be talking about something happy and right afte that he still says something about how he still hates it or how he is still depressed.

ReplyDeleteHolden, to many people he seems like a whiny failure of a teenage boy. And to many he is, he seriously needs to hop off the complaining about how crap his life is. He’s chasing all his friends away by being a childish, immature fool. It’s silly for him to look at life so negatively, because it makes him look like a chump.
ReplyDeleteHe’s pissed off that he doesn’t have friends, but he’s pushing them away. It all comes back to him pushing people away, and although he talks about how mature he is, he’s still a child at heart. And so perhaps after the death of Allie, and being isolated from everyone, society, school mates, everyone, he needs a bud, but he doesn’t have one and that affects his social skills and keeps him a child. He keeps hopping on and off, he needs to pick and team and stick to it. Because shouting at your friends and being a huge d-bag, isn’t going to get you very far.
He tries so hard to be “normal” but he doesn’t know what normal is because he’s never gotten the chance. Holden needs to hop off being depressed and move on. Quit holding onto the past and simply live for the future.
Holden i dont hate him. There are some things I do dislike about him. He is very aggressive with women when he doesint get what he wants. He has very low self esteem. He also has anger problems and he wants look older but doesint not only because of his look. But because of his personality. The death of his little brother really affected him mentally. It made him look at the world in another school. Im sure that before his brothers death holden was different. He does need help with his sick mind.

He complains that they are all phonies. All they do is talk about sex and liquor all day. He does the exact same thing. Every chance he gets he is trying to hook up with a girl or drink. Also he can’t get over his brother and he keeps talking about him. Just get over him already.
ReplyDeleteNobody can stand this kid. Everyone that is close to him either dies or goes away. He can go up to a complete stranger and they will even turn him down without even knowing him. He goes on to say that he can’t stand it when people have to go off and meet their friends. He can’t stand that because he has no friends to go off and meet. You really just need to grow up and get some friends.
I think that Holden feels really loneless and he hasn't a person that can help him or just talk to him. Some his observations, such as relationships with his "friends" or girls are from an immature person causeted from missing their parents. Holden don't irritate me because he has another point of view than mine,but I accept it. Sometimes he can be boring,expecially when he talk about ducks. He didn't have a beautiful childhood to the die of his brother Allie, so I think that you can understand him. He wants just a person to talk abot everything, so he feels alone but in the same time he feels stressfull and for this reason he wants to run away.

You butter up those you want something from and then discard them when they either give you what you want or when they fail to server your wants. You do not look like you are 18, you look like the little KID you are. The fact that you can get drinks does not mean you look older than you are, it means that the places that you choose to go are of such a low quality they will even serve someone as pigheaded and young looking as you.
Holden, I like you as a character, but there is no way that your life is as bad as you make it. You need to give people a chance and not just assume that they're a phony, everyone is a phony to you. You make some good points in the book, but then you cling to them and find a reason in everyone so that you will never be able to find happiness. Everything that has happened so far in your story is your fault, either because you have given up or because you find it "phony". I understand that you haven't got many breaks in you life, but if you want things to start going your way then you need to start looking at things in a different perspective. At this point you seem to have trouble letting go of the past and moving on in life, and this is the reason that you cant find any happiness. If you would move on from the horrors of your past you would find that people aren't as bad as you think and that no matter what they do they aren't these big phonies you make them out to be. So, if you ever want to be a "normal" person that isn't so depressed; you need to let it all go and work on the things that really matter in life, things like trying, finishing school, and being able to communicate with others.
ReplyDeleteHolden, you're an ok kid. You aren't great but not terrible. Some things you do just annoy a lot of people or anger others. Man you need to find a way to control your thoughts and actions. You can be pretty stupid at moments and that, well that just kills people. The term phony comes from you quite often, but do you realize that you are quite phony yourself? Others do man, take for instance most the time you try to get some booze, the bartender sees that you're underaged and thats just not cool. You need help no ofense but you are NUTS! The depression must not be everytime you think about something and just go and get help. You should listen to your friend Luce more often as he isn't a dimwit like you. He probably knows where the ducks go and that while you are asking some fool driving a taxi about it. Think about it you could be better although there are some good sides of you, there still is a lot to clean up.
