Family or Society

Consider how you have grown up over the past 16, 17, or 18 years. What has influenced you the most in how you have matured? Are you a product of nurture - the rules and guidance of your parents and guardians? Or, are you more heavily impacted by society - the laws and belief systems that society places upon us?  Explain your reasoning

After you have written about what influences you most - family or society, next consider the above questions with Huckleberry Finn in mind. Is Huckleberry a product of society or his family upbringing? Defend your position.

You must answer both questions completely to receive full credit.

  1. I think that I have been most effected by my family. I have found myself exhibiting qualities that my parents also show, and I try hard not to follow in the footsteps of society. However, it would be hard not to be effected at least a little by society, as in I do work a lot with computers where my family isn't exactly technology oriented.

Huck Finn seems to show signs of both family and society having an impact on him. He shows the upbringing his father gave him in many of the choices he makes, such as stealing things, lying, and prefering to live in the wild rather then with the rest of society. He also shows that he has been effected by society in that he chose to stick by Jim's side rather than turn him in. If it had been his father making the decision, he would have turned Jim in long ago for the money he could have gotten in return.

  2. I believe that i have been most influenced by my parents. I listen to what society has to say, but i always take action on what my family would do or say to me at that moment.

Huck seems to be influenced by both society and his guardians. Huck likes to be a trouble maker and not very nice like his father. Huck on his travels remembers what Mrs. Douglas would say about what he was doing. Society has also influeced him becuase takes Jim with him instead of turning him. Where he is living that was a very wrong thing to do, but the society that is affecting him is the north. In the north they say that blacks are people and not things that people can own.

  3. I think my parents are the ones who have influenced me thr most over the years. I dont really do anything just because someone else does it, i do what my parents have taught me to do.

Huck seems to be influenced by society and his guardians. Huck likes to live like a poor person with no rules to follow just like his father. But he does not want to be with his father. And society effects him because he has Jim go with him instead of turning him in even though he was planning on turning him in but changed his mind.

  4. I think that I have been influenced by society but also on what my parents values are. I think that the people whom you are around most often, usually friends influence you on what they do also.

Huck seems to be influenced by both society and his family. He acts lke his father, doesnt follow rules. But he also doesnt want to turn out like his father. Society has influenced him because instead of turning Jim in to the authorties he takes him wth him.

  5. I’m more affected by my family’s ways of life but also society. I’m taught to respect elders and do what my parents tell me. It’s hard not to fall into the “society trap” of trends and cliques. I’m not going to do something that may be wrong but is popular, and what is popular is wrong.

Huck is influenced more with his family but has society also influence him. He may not do them right away but eventually he does. Huck listens to the widow when he is around her. Once he leaves, he goes back into his ways of his father, but as the story goes on Huck goes against both society and his family and does what he wants, which is for Jim to be free.

  6. I have been influenced more by my parents over the years of my life. I listen and carry out what they have taught me into my own daily life out in the rest of society. Society does have a big impact on many people though, so it is hard to not be influenced by it in some way. I do different things then what my parents might do, which has been influenced by society, or my friends. But what my parents have taught me is to do what I want and what is right rather be influenced by the other people around me.

I think Huck goes back and forth with being influenced with society and being influenced by his family. At some parts of the story he does what is expected of in society and at other points he goes back to the way of his father. Huck is his own person that varies on what he thinks is the right thing to do. Throughout the book he tries to decipher from whether to do what society wants him to do, what the widow would want him to do and even falls into moments where he does what his father would do.

  7. I believe that I am influenced by my parents and society. My parents influence some of my behaviors and opinions, while society influences other behaviors and opinions. Often these opinions do not agree, allowing me to made decisions with an equal pressure on each side.

Huck is also influenced by parents and society in general. Some of his habits, such as lying to people and stealing food, are from his father, while other actions, such as saving the gang on the ship wreck, are influenced by society.

  8. According to me my family comes first that the society...because they taught me to live in there. My parents always guided me in the right way, with their advances and opinions. Society sometimes imposes us some laws implicitly that we usually follow because the other people do. My parents has influenced me the most in how i have matured.

Huckleberry certainly was influenced by his father, because he is part of his family; But the boy is strong to understand that many behavior of the father aren't so good, I think that Huck doesn't care about the rules, but he is also influenced by the society because he took Jim with him.

  9. I think that because we are each our own person that makes us different from our parents. So even though they tried to influence us, by their views, they are still influenced by society. So even if you like to believe you aren’t influenced by society everyone is in some way, big or small. I think that I follow more towards my parents and how they raised me. I grew up in a very carefree, few rules house which is different from a lot of the people I know.

Now at the start of the story we see he is influenced by his family, which is pap, how he has no respect for Miss Watson and how he refers back to his old habits. But as the story progresses we see him thinking more about the Widow and what she would want him to do or how she would do it. And I view the Widow as “society” because her views are very much how the society would have wanted Huck to behave. I think as the story continues we will see him be more influenced by society. But as it is for everyone, you are influenced by both your parents and society some people more so swing towards one side or the other.

  10. I think I am influenced by both society and my parents. My parents because I have been with them since I was born and I have grown up listening to them and watching them and am influenced by that. On the other hand, I also watch society and my friends and see what they do, but it is not as big of an influence because many times I choose to disagree on what's going on.

Huck is influenced by his pap because he loves the wild, but eventually Widow Douglas influences him to be a better person. You see this when he helps Jim later and always thinks back to what she would have done in the situation. Also, he is influenced by pap by doing what he wouldn't do, or doing things based on his experience with pap such as when he gives the dauphin and duke their way.

  11. I am more influenced by my parents than society because I was taught values from my parents, and they still influence me in my daily life. However, I am not completely like my parents. I like to follow my own path in life, and I don't let society influence me much. I don't try to fit in and follow the crowd, or let myself be pressured into stuff that I don't want to do. I feel that because of who I am, society will not have a large affect on me as I get older.

Huck Finn is more a product of the people around him instead of the southern 1800s white society he lived in. He was influenced by the widow, like when he thought the widow would be glad he tried to help the murderers (page 75). The murderers were the kind of people she seemed to want help. Huck was influenced by his friendship with Jim. Because Jim is his friend he decides not to turn him in and to help him. He decides not to care if people see him as an abolitionist or if other white people see him badly, because Jim is his friend. Huck is also influenced by his dad. He learned from his dad how to deal with people who are liars and scums and not make things worse for himself (page 125). Sometimes Huck feels society's influence but he chooses to follow his gut and not what society is trying to tell him.

  12. I am more influenced by my parents and family. When making the decisions I do in every day life I apply the morals and lessons my parents have taught me throughout my life. Whenever I second guess myself I usually ask myself "would my parents approve?" Although society does play small roles in who I am, I still believe that at the end of the day family comes first and what they think of me is more important than anything when it all comes down to it.

In my opinion Huck seems to be influenced by the people that have raised him. Examples of this are when he decides to not confront The King and The Duke on not actually being true royalty. Another example of Huck using the morals he has been taught, is when Huck attempts to save the men onboard the sinking ship even though he knows they are bad people, he thought Widow Douglas would be proud of him. Huck and I both seem to be influenced by the ones around us, to me it is the people around us in every day life that truly define who we are as an individual.

  13. I am mostly influence by family and friends. I spend a lot of time with my family and friends. They help me make decisions and give me ideas on how to be a better person everyday. They help me get prepared to live my life when I get older and I want to live with my own family. Everything I do I always ask myself would would my parents approve of this?

Huck I believe is heavily influenced by his friends and family to. For example when his dad takes him away he likes the way they were living so he decided that he wants to live in the same way of life like him without the drinking.

  14. I think that I have been influenced more by my parents than society. No matter how much I do with my friends, the values that my parents have raised me on are always present. However, no matter how much these values have been pressed society has always had some influence. Every choice I make is always influenced in some way or another by both my parents and friends.

As for Huck, he has been influenced by his friends. You see this in the way he goes about his everyday life; if he was more heavily influenced by Pap he would still be in St. Petersburg. Also, in situations that force him to make a decision on what to do with Jim, he always sides with Jim. This shows just how highly Huck regards Jim as a person. If Huck was influenced by society, he would have jumped on the first chance he had to turn Jim in.

  15. I believe i am influenced mainly by the people who have been with me while i grew up. My parents play a very strong roll on the choices i make and the situations i let myself get into. Before i make the decisions i make, i ask myself, would my parents be okay with this?

In the same sense, I think Huck is the same way. I think that he was greatly influenced by the family rolls that were played by both Widow Douglas and Pap. Huck shows that he is influenced by Pap in the sense that he is wild and likes to live on the edge, but it seems as though he takes after Widow Dougls aswell. In some situations he thinks Widown Douglas would have been proud of his choices.

  16. I think until a certain age that you are influenced by your parents, and depending on the environment you're in, then you are more influenced by society. Personally, I am more influenced by family and friends, but when making a decision, sometimes what the reaction might be of society plays a part also.

Huck is most influenced by his surroundings, family and society, because he is the complete opposite of Pap and he knows that how he acts is wrong. But he lives in the South and does not agree with slavery because he is helping Jim.

  17. I believe I was influenced by my parents up until a certain age. Every rule they taught, I tried my hardest to follow. Once I reached a certain age, I started to form my own opinions. This brings me to the conclusion that I am slightly influenced by society. In my opinion, teenagers idol certain celebrities and try to become more like them.

Huck is definitely influenced by family. He was brought up by the Widow Douglass. She has tried to instill positive values in Huck's life. On the other hand, Huck also relies on some of Pap's views. Society would disapprove of Huck helping a runaway slave, but he has decided to help Jim. This shows that Huck is relying on a gut feeling rather than the views of society.

  18. I would say that my parents are the ones who have influenced me rather than society. The reason i say this is because they were there for me right from the start, taught me morals, and showed me standards to live up to.

Huck finn is influenced by his old man and the Widow Douglass. Although he does not see his father much he is still under the influence of him because he thinks and acts like him in certain situations. Widow douglass is kind of like the Huck's mother he never had, she shows huck religion and unwrtitten rules to live by.

  19. In my personal situation I would say I have been influenced heavily by my parents because they are the ones that tought me personal values and the difference between right and wrong. However, I will say that society has had its role in influencing how I act and behave.

In the case of Huck Finn I believe he was influenced by both his father and Widow Douglas more than society. In the story it shows that he has a sense of moral rightousness and consceince which he learned from Miss Douglas. Other times he might not do the "right" thing and be more influenced by his father and instead lie and deceit.

  20. I am influenced by my parents. They have brought me up in a certain way close to the way their parents raised them. My parents have certain rules and expectations that I have to go by. Society has little influence on my life but is still there since we have laws it kind of guides us through life.
Huck is influenced by both his father and Widow Douglas. Many times Huck will reflect on stuff that both of them have said. He has the more free and wild lifestyle from his dad and a more good mannered side from the widow. Huck kind of ignores society and does his own things unlike many characters he meets on his travels.

  21. For my life, my parents influence the decisions i make. They taught me to think reasonably at all situations and set emotions aside, but society can stir up alot of emotions and alter my decisions because of this. For example getting into a fight you should always walk away, but sometimes anger gets the best of you and its not that easy. for huck i think its a mix of lessons from his dad, and widow douglass, and society because his dad says always do whats right, widow douglass tries to teach him manners, and society for him is always changing. Huck didn't grow up with 1 type of family he had 2 opposite families, and after running away i think he wanted to be in between of that scale.

  23. I feel that i have been influenced by both of my parents. My mother and father both have added their view into my life on many subjects. When i come to a situation i am unsure of i tend to ask both of them because they both have different advice. As i grow up they wont always be there me and i will have to turn to society to help me with my beliefs.

Huck has been heavily influenced by his father. No matter what hes doing he usually ends up returning to his fathers way of life, being uncivilized. However, the widow has made a small contribution because occasionaly Huck thinks to himself how she would feel about what he is doing.

  24. My mother is the one who mainly influences me. My mother and me are a lot alike. Society has influenced me also. When your around others it also forms a way to the things you do.
Huck I think is mainly influenced by society. Widow Douglas helps with is education and manners. Though out the book he comes back to that's what widow douglas would do or say. His father is not around much, but he picks up things from his father too. Not many good things though.

  25. I would say that am most influenced by my parents in the decisions I make. They were the ones to teach me morals, rules, and respect for others. They have kept a high set of standards for me to follow, and I try to not let society get in the way. But sometimes especially now that I'm a little older, I do sway some of my decisions.
I think that Huck was mostly influenced by Pap and Widow Douglas. She taught him religion and basic respect to live by and Pap taught him general rules of growing up. Huck didn't always agree with what they taught him which caused him to follow society sometimes.

  26. I have and will always think that i am the way i am because of my parents. I try to see some similarities of me and my parents and there is a lot. My parents have taught me the good things in life with manners and what not to do. Society has good messegas to but they have bad ones to.
I think that huck lives of his family has well. He wants to do the opposite of what his dad does and hates what his dad does. Huck also helped jim something a society would not do they would have turned in a runaway slave.
